Caution Signs for Safe Diving
A must try sport which offers an experience like no other is that of scuba diving. It is unique, beautiful and at the same time adventurous. Just like any sport though, scuba diving has its dangers. Proper training and and preparation is a must for those wishing to take up scuba diving. Here are a few safety pointers to go through before embarking on a scuba diving adventure.
Dive Training
If you are looking to make a hobby out of scuba diving, it is advisable for you to obtain a scuba diving certificate. This can be done by way of a training course. However, if you are looking for a one-off scuba diving trip or just a relaxing outing, it is recommended for you to take along an instructor with you.
Physically Healthy
Regular visits to the doctors before any scuba diving activity is recommended. A doctor should give the all clear on any divers physical conditioning to ensure safety. Good respiratory and cardiovascular systems are essential to diving. Those potential divers with weak hearts and asthma should be aware that during a dive they are most prone to asphyxiation. Being a good swimmer is also essential to diving even though scuba equipment assist scuba divers to navigate underwater.
Precautions on the Dive Site
Ranking is given for your scuba diving training and certification depending on the underwater hazards you have been trained to handle. Do avoid places that you are not certified to manage. This is due to the hazardous nature of some dive areas which would need special certification and training in specialized equipment. These hazards include scuba diving in shark infested waters, ice floes, coral reefs with toxic or aggressive underwater life forms, underwater caves and shipwrecks.
Ensure that your Dive Equipment is Properly Maintained
Included in the training certification process is care and maintenance of scuba diving equipment. Keeping your gear in good shape is necessary in keeping you alive under water. Always remember that when renting scuba equipment to thoroughly check it for faults. Drowning is a real possibility if your breathing apparatus fails while diving.
Dive Friend
When embarking on a scuba diving excursion, an experienced instructor is a wise choice to take as a buddy. It is important that you do not take a buddy who is new to scuba diving. The chances of accidents happening will be quite high here. However, if you decide to take a new diver with you, ensure that they know how to follow instructions once underwater. Have a buddy watching out for you if you decide to dive alone.
Observe the Weather Conditions before Diving
Check weather reports and conditions before any dive to ensure you do not get caught out. You do not want to be scuba diving during a thunderstorm or typhoon. It pays to follow the weather reports and news alerts. Also have enough medical equipment and supplies on hand when diving. Adverse weather conditions have proven to be quite devastating. Heat stroke and dehydration have been a direct result of heat waves even to divers underwater because water conducts heat more efficiently than air.
Be Aware of Any Signs of Danger
Hypothermia, heat exhaustion, asphyxiation, dehydration and a diver-specific malady called decompression sickness are a few conditions that afflict divers. Decompression sickness occurs when the body of a diver is exposed to prolonged breathing of high pressure gas. This can also happen when there is a rapid decrease in pressure after ascending too quickly. When they return to the surface, the body is not able to adapt itself to the lower surface pressure. As a result of this, air bubbles form in the blood causing dizziness, sickness and vomiting from system shock. It is important that divers have some understanding and knowledge on these signs and symptoms to ensure that serious problems are contained.
